Cannabis is dioecious, which means a normal population comes up part male and part female. Feminized seed removes that coin flip. Every plant you put in the ground is a flowering female, which changes the math on labor, spacing, and what you actually harvest.
In the wild, male plants throw pollen, the wind carries it, and the females that catch it start building the next generation of seed. Males are essential for breeding work, but in a production field they mostly get in the way. Feminized seed is bred to produce female plants only, so the crop you plant is the crop you intended.
Our breeding partners bring female plants to produce their own pollen by working the plant away from the Y chromosome, leaving only X. That female derived pollen is then used to set seed on other females. The result is seed stock that reliably comes up female instead of a field you have to walk and cull.
Once a female is pollinated, she shifts her energy into building strong seed instead of cannabinoids and resin. One stray male in an otherwise female field can pull down cannabinoid production across the block and take a real bite out of the season. Feminized seed is the cheapest insurance against that.
