How to Read a Hemp Certificate of Analysis Before You Order Seed

A certificate of analysis is the closest thing to a preview you get for a seed lot. Learn which numbers matter and which ones need context.
What a COA can and cannot tell you
A certificate of analysis is a snapshot of one sample, taken at one moment, from one lot. It is useful for confirming that a supplier has tested the material and for spotting red flags before you buy. It is not a contract promising that your field will produce the same numbers. Soil, climate, harvest timing, and handling all influence the final result.
Total THC and the compliance window
Federal hemp law measures total THC on a dry weight basis, and the commonly cited threshold is 0.3 percent. What a COA shows you is where that particular sample landed at the time it was tested. A line that tests at 0.25 percent early in the window can climb past the limit if harvest is delayed. Ask your supplier for multiple test points across the finish window, not just a single peak cannabinoid number.
Cannabinoid ranges versus guarantees
CBD and CBG percentages are often the first numbers growers look at, but they need context. A range based on several seasons of data is more honest than a single top figure from a single plant. If a catalog lists a precise percentage, ask whether that number represents an average, a high, or a target. Seed genetics set the range. Your farm writes the final score.
Match the document to the lot
Before you accept seed, confirm that the COA or documentation you were sent matches the lot number on your invoice or packaging. Documentation from a previous season or a different batch is not a substitute. If you need a current certification letter for your state or tribal program, request it at the time of order so the paperwork travels with the seed.
